Blackwater Cypress Swamp on a Warm Sunny Day in November in Kayaks . . . Perfect!

SWC and guests had a wonderful time paddling through the blackwater cypress swamp today, Nov. 5, at Robertson Millpond, a Wake County Preserve near Wendell. The millpond is part of Buffalo Creek, named for the herds of buffalo once seen watering there, and had an operating mill there from the 1820’s through the 1940’s. The preserve has also been recognized as a Wetland Treasure by the Carolina Wetlands Association. This blackwater swamp more closely resembles Coastal Plain habitats than Piedmont, and provides the only bald cypress habitat in Wake County.

It was a perfect day and a beautiful place to quietly kayak through this special wetland.
