SWC Workday at the Holly Springs Food Cupboard

We had a nice time working (and sweating!) side-by-side at the Holly Springs Food Cupboard (HSFC) this morning. Weeds in the pollinator beds didn’t stand a chance with this crew, and some even ventured into the adjoining woods to tackle the encroaching growth of Japanese stilts grass. Jerry DeWitt, garden manager at the HSFC and longtime SWC member, introduced the team to the food distribution and garden mission of the HSFC, and Angela Hawkins, HSFC volunteer and also on staff at Hemlock Bluffs Park where we also have periodic workdays, led the eleven-strong work party.

We look forward to a continuing close relationship with the HSFC, including the long-term planning for a guided nature trail on the property. HSFC has played a vital role in the community for ten years, providing food to over 400 families in need every month, as well as managing a garden that contributes more than 2,000 pounds of fresh vegetables, plus eggs from chickens and honey from bees maintained on the property.

  1. The HSFC is a great place to volunteer with a crew that has so much knowledge they share with each other to help the community.
SWC did an amazing job today helping us to make our gardens look better. Look forward to working with the SWC crew again.
