Two more homes for bluebirds in Wake County! We installed two bluebird houses at Simple Gifts Community Garden in Apex on a beautiful late fall afternoon December 13. This brings the total installed in Wake County this year to 31. While there, the team also took the opportunity to plant five turks cap plants and sow seeds for black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia), green-headed coneflowers, and clasping coneflowers. Thanks to Jeff for making the assemblies, to John for contributing the plants and seeds today, and Beth for helping with the project. We have more birdhouses and plants to go, so watch for future workdays!

The South Wake Conservationists are to be commended for finishing the year in strong fashion. Efforts were made to get additional bluebird nesting boxes set up in anticipation of next year’s broods. Existing native plants were supplemented with new perennials to insure establishment before Spring. Pollinator gardens were groomed and weeded to establish a good balance between wildlife habitat and appearance. Getting ahead of the notorious invasives and at the same time increasing knowledge is to be highlighted. The year 2024 should result in a wonderful show of blooms further acknowledging the Chapter’s sincere dedication in protecting and conserving wildlife well into 2024. The Chapter has accomplished a lot in 2023 and is paused to do even more next year as opportunities await for all ages.
