Call for Volunteers -Trail Maintenance at Swift Creek Bluffs  – Tues., Jan. 23rd

Join us for a vigorous trail maintenance activity, as we continue to partner with the Triangle Land Conservancy. South Wake Conservationists have “adopted” the Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve as one of our focus areas for our conservation efforts in south Wake County. On this workday, we will be securing the railings on the famous “stairway to heaven” by adding and pounding gravel around posts that have gotten loose this year. Tools will be provided.

These north-facing 100-foot bluffs rising from Swift Creek provide a unique micro-climate that supports flora more at home in the cooler Appalachians: hydrangea, bigleaf snowbell, witch-hazel and alternate-leaf dogwood, as well as massive beech trees dating from the beginning of the 19th century. This unique preserve is a pristine, natural haven nestled between man-made developments and roads on all sides. In the spring, this site hosts an amazing assortment of ephemeral native plants and flowers, such as trout lily, bloodroot, wild geranium, and many more.

Triangle Land Conservancy asks that each volunteer sign their waiver, which can be downloaded below to print, sign, and bring with you. If you prefer, extra copies will be available to sign onsite.

Please register for this workday below, and we look forward to seeing you there!
