Getting the Word Out about our Marine Fisheries

On March 16th, South Wake Conservationists brought attention to the crisis in North Carolina’s estuaries to local Wake County residents with a special exhibit at Cabela’s store in Garner, as part of a Spring Fishing Conservation weekend. Dr. Louis Daniel, Senior Marine Scientist with the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, joined us for the event and shared his personal insights and perspectives on the disastrous impacts lack of effective policies, laws, and regulations to protect our estuaries is having on the ecosystem and fisheries stocks. While NCWF is working hard behind the scenes to educate and advocate for action action on the part of NC legislators, it is important to bring awareness of this issue to the voting public, as well.

The Save our Sounds campaign by the North Carolina Wildlife Federation is a critical initiative and needs our support. Please visit the NCWF website for more information, including a very sobering video describing the extent of the ongoing destruction of this ecosystem.

Contact your state senator and representative and ask them to act now to stop this devastating practice and save our sounds. You can find the names of your NC senator and representative here. Send an email or call today and ask them to enact legislation to halt the destructive inshore bottom trawling practices, where North Carolina is the only state that allows them.
