Bird enthusiasts and members of the South Wake Conservationists (SWC) were treated to a delightful event on May 19th, 2024, at the Sugg Farm Purple Martin Colony in Holly Springs. The afternoon unfolded under the expert guidance of Courtney Rousseau, founder and president of the North Carolina Purple Martin Society (NCPMS).
Courtney’s knowledge and passion for these fascinating native birds were on full display. She shared the history of the Sugg Farm colony, providing attendees a look back in time with photos. She also provided an explanation of the purple martin life cycle, shedding light on the intricate journey these birds take throughout the year, allowing everyone to appreciate their remarkable resilience.
The excitement truly peaked when Courtney performed a nest check. This offered a rare glimpse into the lives of the purple martin families residing in the colony’s gourds. The best part? The check revealed multiple nests with babies! Attendees witnessed chicks at various stages of development, some a week old, some just 4 days old, and even one precious hatchling that had arrived that very day! Witnessing these tiny bundles nestled in their cozy gourds was a truly heartwarming experience.
This event served as a wonderful testament to the dedication of the NCPMS and the beauty of purple martins. Everyone undoubtedly walked away with a deeper appreciation for these remarkable creatures and the importance of preserving their habitat.
