Chimney Swifts! Watch their spectacular aeronautic display Sept. 27th.

Chimney Swifts diving into a chimney

South Wake Conservationists will meet on a Friday, Sept. 27th, 6:30-8:00 PM, as we visit a local roosting site to witness the incredible spectacle of migratory Chimney Swifts turning in for the night. These birds begin their roosting ritual after sunset. This will be at a local site in Fuquay Varina, with the specific details to be provided after you register. Bring the whole family – all ages welcome!

Chimney swifts once nested in hollow trees, but today they nearly always nest in chimneys or other structures. At dusk, they will swarm around the structure they intend to roost in for the night, and then, in the blink of an eye, they fall into a funnel formation and literally pour into the top of the structure to get settled within for the night. Thousands of them. It is a sight to behold!

We will talk about the fascinating habits of this species and then kick back and watch the show. This will be a fun and fascinating observation event for all ages.

  1. Hello, David Barber and I (Cissy McKissick), signed up for this event, but will no longer be able to attend. Hate to miss it, but we are needed in CA to provide child care support for our grandchildren:). I hope it’s a wonderful event!
