Save the Trees! Volunteers Needed Sat. Nov. 16 to Cut Down Invasive Wisteria Vines.

Chinese wisteria vine on a tree

Chinese wisteria is an aggressive, invasive plant from China, first introduced as an ornamental plant here in the early 20th century. Like most invasives, it has now escaped into the natural habitats, literally strangling trees and dominating the ecosystem, to the detriment of local wildlife. One such critical infestation is found in trees next to the Simple Gifts Community Garden in Apex.

On Saturday morning, Nov. 16, we will continue work begun last Saturday to cut down these destructive vines. South Wake Conservationists volunteers are invited to join the work party. If you are able to come, please bring work gloves, water, and any tools you have for the task, such as loppers, bow saws, hand clippers, or even pole saws (powered or manual). With many hands, we should be able to conquer this and let the trees breathe again!

Chinese wisteria facts:

  • Pretty flowers, but deadly to the ecosystem
  • Kills trees by girdling and even cutting through bark
  • Creates thickets that crowd out native plants wildlife depend on
  • Still sold by nursery trade!
