We had a great turnout to continue progress on restoring a nature trail that has fallen into disrepair at West Lake Elementary School on a beautiful fall day today. Courtney Rousseau, project lead, got multiple sub-teams oriented and pointed in the right direction to achieve multiple goals today. The entrance steps to the trail were completely rebuilt and fortified with concrete and mortar to create a safe entrance to the trail. Two new birdhouses were installed, one for bluebirds and one for brown-headed nuthatches. Missing and rotted landscape timbers lining the trail were replaced and several old signposts were removed. Branches were trimmed and a number of native plants were planted today, as well. All in all, a very productive afternoon!
Courtney also shared preliminary draft images of most of the 23 new interpretive nature signs she is designing for the trail. These will be produced on durable 9″x12″ aluminum composite material (ACM), once finalized, and mounted on posts along the trail.
Stay tuned for the next workday on this fun project!
