SWC, led by Jeremy Bock, hosted an enthusiastic group of eighteen folks eager to learn about birding and how to us the eBird app to contribute to a worldwide community science database. eBird, managed by Cornell University, is among the world’s largest biodiversity-related science projects, with more than 100 million bird sightings contributed annually by eBirders around the world! After everyone was introduced to how to use the app, we set out down the path along the lake to observe and record the birds we found along the way, creating digital “checklists.” During the course of the morning walk, we encountered at least fourteen different species, including the curiously-named yellow-rumped warbler and the ruby-crowned kinglet.
Many thanks to Jeremy and Jennifer for organizing this event, and we look forward to another one later in the year at a different location.
