How do frogs breathe (hint – not necessarily the way you might think). Twenty-four kids came to a special Eco Kids activity at Bass Lake Park on Saturday, led by NCWF VP of Outdoor Engagement Mary Bures. It was all about frogs. We started with an experiment to learn about semi-permeable membranes. Why? Because frogs can breathe through their skin, which is semi-permeable and allows oxygen and CO2 to go through it to “breathe.” This comes in handy underwater! Adults also have rudimentary lungs, plus a respiratory surface in the lining of their mouths. The participants followed that experiment with a frog-centered scavenger hunt, learning all kinds of cool facts about these amphibians. Afterward, everyone broke into groups for an i-spy hike down the trail.
Pretty fun! SWC has more Eco Kids activities coming up, so please keep an eye on the calendars, via email and posts on this website. The next one is the Magnificent Tree ID Hike at Umstead Park on April 5th, so be sure to sign up for that one next.
