Caring for Our Adopted Wetland

Trash at Walnut Creek Wetland Park

We had a strong crew of fourteen volunteers, led by Dave Barber, remove trash from SWC’s adopted area at Walnut Creek Wetlands Park on Memorial Day weekend.  Thank you to the dedicated high school students from the student-led South Wake Area Native Ecosystem Conservation (SWANEC) organization, SWC members, families, and park staff for tackling trash removal in this precious wetland. This not only improves the appearance, but it protects wildlife from ingestion and entanglement issues and keeps plastics from breaking down and washing downstream in the Neuse watershed to Pamlico Sound.

It has been dry for over a week, so we were able to get into the bog areas that are usually either full of water or mud. We were able to observe a crawfish towers and learned about how they are built from two young middle school conservationists! The team finished the event with eight full bags, which contributes to the NCWF Clean and Green Program.

Keep an eye out for more community partnership volunteer days coming up this summer and fall.
