On Saturday morning, SWC joined Middle Creek High School-based South Wake Area Native Ecosystems Conservation, SWANEC, and the Town of Apex Environmental Programs Coordinator to tackle removing invasives from Apex Community Park. Last month, SWANEC joined the SWC cleanup at Walnut Creek Wetland Park, and this week it was our turn to join theirs! There was a great turnout from the community (est. 20-25), and the focus Saturday was the infamous Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum).
Our hats are off to the initiative and commitment to conservation shown by these great student leaders, who are making a huge impact on invasives removal in the local area. They have set a summer schedule of nearly daily activity, with a goal to remove 2,000 pounds this summer! We look forward to continued partnership with this worthy organization, as well as future engagement with the Town of Apex, as it continues to pursue and grow its Environmental Programs.
