Starting the Day with a Native Plant Garden Cleanup

The weeds were back at the Bass Lake Garden, so a tiger team of eight eager SWC volunteers came to the rescue early Sunday morning. This dedicated team dove right in at 8:00 AM and by 9:45 had completely cleared this large garden of weeds and added a good layer of natural mulch between the native plantings to keep them in check this summer. Some yellowjackets nesting in the mulch pile didn’t take kindly to having their nest disturbed, so we quickly retreated and diverted to a different part of the pile!

This is an educational garden, and we plan to add additional plantings in the fall to show visitors the kinds of native plants that are beneficial to wildlife and can be planted in shady or partly-shady environments.

Watch for more conservation workdays, including gardens like this, invasive plant removals, trash cleanups, and wildlife habitat installations. Join us when you can!
