
Chinese Privet

SWC is collaborating with Wake Audubon on this project, led by Jim Hunsberger, to tackle the invasives at Carroll Howard Johnson Environmental Education Park in Fuquay Varina. This is one in a series of invasive removal workdays at this park. Working near the park entrance, the team has mostly been removing Chinese Privet, with some Oriental Bittersweet on the last two spring events, though there may be some English Ivy and Autumn Olive as well.
We basically cut or pull the invasives and haul them out by the parking lot. The town loads all this into trailers and hauls it away as they are filled. Last time, they filled three trailers! For any bigger stuff, town staff chainsaws for us, and they also help extract the big stuff, help pull down hefty vines, etc., so it’s a team effort.
We suggest that folks wear long sleeved shirts and pants and bring gloves, water, bug repellent, sunblock, and a protective/visored hat. If you can help with this project, please register below:
