Privet Begone!

Team in front of piled-up privet

SWC joined Wake Audubon on a project today, led by Jim Hunsberger, to tackle the invasives at Carroll Howard Johnson Environmental Education Park in Fuquay Varina. The team uprooted, cut down and treated, or otherwise removed two full tandem-trailer loads of Chinese Privet this morning. There was also a massive Oriental Bittersweet that took several people to yank down and remove. The challenge is on, and our collective team is ready keep going, as there is much more to find in this 28 acre park!

This park is a hidden treasure in Fuquay Varina, rich in native species, some of which have been noted as rare for this part of the state. For instance, up to twenty different species of ferns have been identified in a recent survey. It has also been a favorite spot for birding. SWC looks forward to continuing to work with our friends at Wake Audubon to help restore and conserve this beutiful natural space in southern Wake County.

The next workday is planned for Thurs., Nov. 20th, so watch for another post to sign up for that one.
