Invasives Blitz at Johnson Environmental Education Park Nov. 20th

SWC is partnering with Wake Audubon’s ongoing project to conserve and support the natural heritage of a unique nature park in Fuquay Varina, the Carroll Howard Johnson Environmental Education Park. The NC Natural Heritage Progam lists portions of this site as 7 out of 10 for natural diversity, which is exceptional for a suburban/urban location! In addition to the ongoing series of invasives workdays, our teams are starting to plan additonal conservation project ideas together.

Our next workday to remove invasive plants is scheduled for Nov. 20th. This is one in a series of invasive removal workdays at this park. The team has mostly been removing Chinese privet and some oriental bittersweet on previous events, though though some English ivy and autumn olive can be found lurking there as well.

Our teams cut or pull the invasives and haul them out by the parking lot. Fuquay Varina Public Works loads all this into large trailers and hauls it away as they are filled.  Last time, we filled two trailers, and there is plenty more to go!

We suggest that folks wear long sleeved shirts and pants and bring gloves and water. Tools are provided, but feel free to bring any favorite personal tools as well.
