New Eco Kids Garden Program – Volunteers Needed Feb. 25th

Rooftop garden beds

Volunteers needed for initial garden cleanup and inventory!

We are excited about our brand new partnership with Southeast Raleigh Elementary School to engage kids in hands-on native pollinator gardening for wildlife plus some organic produce. We are fortunate to have a great starting point, with 34 raised beds already in place on the school rooftop! There are some remnants of previous plants, which will be inventoried, but there is still a huge blank slate to work from.

Southeast Raleigh Elementary School is in partnership with a wonderful non-governmental program for the community called Southeast Raleigh Promise. We have the opportunity, working with the school administration and the Southeast Raleigh Promise program, to establish a teaching garden for the 4th and 5th graders. We hope to show the students the wonders of nature that native gardens will attract, plus how they can learn the skills to maintain them.

A small SWC core team has formed, consisting of Dave Barber, Cissy McKissick, Monty Morée, and Penny Kellar, a leader from the Simple Gifts Community Garden in Apex. This team is doing the initial planning and preparation to get this all underway. We are very appreciative of the strong support from Principal Lamar Hill, who has been very closely involved.

Please roll up the sleeves and join us, as we have a workday to clean up the beds and inventory what’s there already. And we welcome anyone that would like to help out with the actual planting with the kids later! More details to follow.
