A Break in the Rain: Eagles and More at Jordan Lake Dam

Mother Nature almost had other plans for us this morning, but she provided just enough of a break to nearly 30 eager nature lovers that gathered at the Jordan Lake Dam for our highly anticipated Bald Eagle Watch. Jeremy Bock, a SWC member and local birder, shared fascinating insights into the behavior and resurgence of these majestic raptors. He also set up his spotting scope, allowing everyone to get an intimate look at the eagles from a safe distance. We managed to spot a handful of Bald Eagles soaring or taking perch high in the trees. Two were adults sporting their iconic white heads and dark bodies, while the third was a younger eagle showing off its unique mottled coloring.

The eagles may have been why everyone showed up, but the Haw River ecosystem was putting on a full performance for us. As we scanned the water and sky, the group was treated to sightings of Great Blue Herons, Double-crested Cormorants, Black and Turkey Vultures, an Osprey, Pied-billed Grebes and Bufflehead ducks. To top off an already successful birding morning, a beaver also made a guest appearance swimming along the riverbank.

It was a powerful reminder that even a gray, rainy day can turn into something spectacular if you’re willing to look. A huge thank you to Jeremy for sharing his expertise and to everyone who braved the damp weather.
