We are one step closer to holding our first Eco Kids garden workday with 4th and 5th grade students at the Southeast Raleigh Elementary School rooftop garden! Eight SWC volunteers were on the roof Wednesday to inspect, clean up, and inventory the 34 raised beds in preparation for our first hands-on planting and education session with the students on Mar. 27th.
The team is excited to make this dream a reality. The gardens will be stewarded by the students, with assistance and instruction from our team. It will be a combination of pollinator and other native plants, plus some organic vegetable crops, all in the spirit of sustainability. Once the native plants are established, this will also become a great center of learning and observation of wildlife, especially insects and birds. With any luck, the deer won’t be able to get on the roof!
