Love Those Button Bushes!

In 2021 the South Wake Conservationists and North Carolina Wildlife Federation planted Button Bushes at the North Carolina Art Park and Umstead State Park. They were planted in moist locations, a necessity if the bushes (actually a shrub) were to produce blooms. The blooms are balls of white flowers resembling pincushions. Ducks and other water birds consume the seeds. The plant’s nectar attracts butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects. On August 17, 2023 I visited the planting locations and observed two groups of thriving bushes! The first 2 photos were taken at Umstead and the remaining 2 at the Art Park (blooms not yet mature). Enjoy the photos!

  1. That’s very welcomed news for those bushes are great pollinator plants. Unfortunately they may be one of the more difficult plants to propagate by seeds. Hopefully we’ll be able to collect seeds from multiple locations as we learn more about increasing germination success. Yates Mill was planted with Button Bush and may be another site to check. Thanks for the update.

    1. Thanks for your comment Bill! I want to see if we can plant some more at a park in Fuquay which has several ponds!
