Autumn Big Sweep at Walnut Creek Wetland Park – Sept. 7th

Liitter in stream

We invite all our SWC volunteers to join the next scheduled litter cleanup at Walnut Creek Wetland Park, with whom we have established a new partnership this year. What is now a wetland park is an amazing turn-around story of what has been literally a dumping ground downstream from the City of Raleigh for decades to a re-emerging wetland through community and civic action.

This is an NCWF Clean and Green event. For every 25 pounds of trash collected, one tree will be provided to plant in local conservation areas!

SWC has partnered with the City of Raleigh’s Big Sweep Program for the past several years, keeping litter, especially plastics, out of our local watersheds to protect the waterways and associated wildlife. For over 30 years, Big Sweep has coordinated litter cleanups in Wake County focused on watersheds, streams, lakes, and wetlands that ultimately lead to the ocean.

Be sure to also come to our next meeting on Sept. 5th for a very special presentation on the history of this wetland: “The Environmental Underdog Story of the Walnut Creek Wetland Park,” presented by Celia Lechtman, Assistant Park Manager. The program starts at 7 PM at Bass Lake Park in Holly Springs. Watch this website for registration details to be posted soon.

Volunteers will be using pickup sticks, gloves, and bags to collect litter around the park. All supplies and logistics will be provided. Volunteers should bring a sunscreen and a hat, and long pants strongly recommended. There will be a designated zones for families with young children.

Register with Wake County Parks below. Please put “”SWC”” for the group designation question in the registration form so you will be grouped together.

  1. Signing up for this is a nightmare. Put in your email address to see if you have a profile with the Parks. Yes I do. Put in your password. Who the hell knows? Same for my wife. The need 100 people but only 3 have signed up. Surprise!
