SWC joined forces with Walnut Creek Wetland Park in Raleigh for a chilly but productive day of service on Marin Luther King Day (Jan. 20th), removing invasive Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum) by hand from the grounds. This annual grass quickly takes over disturbed areas and spreads from there, displacing native vegetation critical for local wildlife. It is most common in woodlands of the piedmont and mountains of the southeast. Seeds are known to be viable for up to seven years.

Great work yāall!

In hindsight the Silt Grass Folk did a great job at Walnut Creek. They had a good grasp on what needed to be done, and by the picture attached, almost sealed themselves behind a wall of Stilt Grass. Thankfully, no one was lost and we’re primed for a tree planting or another invasive pull.
