Garner’s annual Groundhog Day event at White Deer Park was a hit again this year, and SWC was happy to participate as an exhibitor for the third year in a row. There was a nice turnout, and in the end, the groundhog (“Snerd”), provided by our friends at CLAWS in Chapel Hill, gave an upbeat weather prediction to the Mayor of Garner.
Our theme this year is “Save our Sounds,” building on the NCWF campaign to grow public support to persuade the legislature to ban inshore shrimp trawling. There was a lot of interest in this, with many unaware of this issue, but pulling out their phones to scan the QR code to email their state senators and representatives.
The kids enjoyed other activities, including making paper-bag groundhog puppets, trying out animal sounds, and identifying animal tracks. All ages tried out the nature Q&A board to test their knowledge, too. Many thanks to Jeff, Bob, Regan, Tyler, John, and Bob M. for making it all a success!
