A Day at the Lake

Today was a double-header, clearing out the weeds that had taken over our native plant garden by the Bass Lake Park picnic shelter and planting aquatic plants along the shore of Bass Lake. What a great turnout and great teamwork to get it all done this morning!

The weeding crew did a full court press on that garden by the picnic shelter. We can actually see the plants that were planted there originally again! And we plan to add more in the fall, once we get past the hot weather.

Along the way, we enjoyed encounters with a variety of wildlife, including a bald eagle fly-by, a worm snake that was a little miffed at our weeding, a dragonfly that had just molted and still had its cocoon hanging from its abdomen, and turtles galore!

Down by the lake, the intrepid aquatic team planted 50 pickerel weed at various locations. They will flower later in the summer and be great habitat for fish and macroinvertebrates.

They also planted 10 button bushes, which will look like this, once they start blooming.

Come join us as we do much more native plant habitat work for our wildlife over the coming months, led by our new leader for the Garden for Wildlife program, Debra Quinlan.

  1. sorry we missed today’s SWC activities. Regan attended the Cary protest (hundreds, maybe over 1000?), and were attending the Raleigh one at 4 pm with friends. Challenging priorities. Bob
