It seems a lot of folks were more than ready to get outside and have some “dirt therapy” after all the Thanksgiving feasting! Over twenty volunteers came to Bass Lake Park Sunday afternoon to refresh, plant, and mulch a multitude of new native plants in the SWC Native Shade Plant Demonstration Garden. Debra Quinlan and Sara Donohoe, co-leaders of the new Wildlife Gardens and Habitat Committee, took this garden to a new level. Sara designed a whole new landscape plan for the site, and Debra organized all the details of what to plant where with flags in advance of people arriving.
The team raked, planted, and mulched 73 plants in two hours, proving “many hands make light work!” This will help fill in gaps in the current beds and be ready to flourish next spring. The public handouts will also be updated accordingly, so visitors can get ideas on how to plant natives in their own back yards.

Plants added Sunday included the following, jointly funded by NCWF and SWC:
- Yellowroot
- Dwarf crested iris
- Foam flower
- River oats
- Christmas fern
- Cinnamon fern
- White wood aster
- Phlox divericata

Watch our SWC calendar on the website to sign up for more activities to support wildlife like this, and subscribe, if you have not already. Thanks to all for a great workday!

Fabulous article, endeavors and leadership development! Congratulations!
