Now that school is out, we are working to keep this wonderful rooftop garden ship shape for the school, as we prepare our program to resume with the students in September. We got a good start on weeding the pollinator beds on June 8th, but there is still a lot of biomass left to clear out and let the pollinator plants take hold. We want to get the invasive grasses out before they drop their seeds!
There are sixteen beds in the center of the roof area, which is where the students have raised their crops and pollinator plants this spring, and they are in very good shape. Then there is the outer perimeter of an additional sixteen tall beds, which are fully dedicated to pollinators. Between the drought and the resiliance of invasive grasses and other plants, the pollinator plants have had a rough summer so far. We want to keep it well-maintained and watered (within Raleigh drought guidelines) to establish an increasingly mature pollinator ecosystem as part of our program. The students will pitch in again, when they return in the fall.
Can you help? It is kind of fun (and quite safe) up on the roof, and this is a very popular program that is very meaningful to the students and administration at this school. Just bring your personal water bottle and a pair of gardening gloves, and we’ll supply the rest. Hope you can join us!
