SWC welcomed our good friend Sarah Goldsmith, Lead Educator at Crowder County Park, to share amazing stories at our quarterly meeting last evening about how animals of all kinds are able to build amazing structures without an engineering degree! We had a full house at Bass Lake Park, with 32 people in person and an additional 39 online. Everyone had fun with this topic, and the kids asked some of the best questions!

Animals spotlighted during the talk included not just beavers, but also spiders, birds, bees, wasps, ants, termites, and crayfish. All of these instinctively build structures in unique ways that directly contribute to their survival and are essential to the larger ecosystem. Did you know that there are seven different categories of bird nest styles, five different categories for spider webs, and five different categories for bee “nests” (comb is just one of them)?
Please keep watch on our calendar for upcoming events, including conservation workdays, Eco Kids outings, and an upcoming webinar on designing for nature in your yard. And if you have not filled out our interest survey, you can do that here.
