Was today’s Gardens and Habitats for Wildlife event an invasive removal or a pollinator gardening day?!
We definitely did both!
On May 30, South Wake Conservationists volunteers came together to restore the Yates Mill Pond pollinator garden. Native plants that had been buried under a dense tangle of poison ivy, blackberry brambles, and the invasive trio of porcelain berry, Japanese honeysuckle, and lespedeza finally saw the sun again.
Our team filled nine lawn bags with invasive vegetation and debris, clearing vital space for native wildflowers and pollinator‑friendly species to rebound.
There’s still more work ahead, but today’s effort was a huge effort and meaningful step in reclaiming this habitat for the wildlife that depends on it. Thank you to everyone who donated their time, energy, and enthusiasm to care for this valuable community habitat.
