Great kick off for The Invasive Removal Coalition of Cary’s first event at the Annie Jones Trail in Cary. Approximately 16 volunteers from multiple conservation groups showed up. Six of those were with SWC, other groups that participated were SWANEC and Rewild Cary. The Coalition provided quality snacks and beverages.
The mission was to primarily remove stilt grass and liriope in a flood plain between Tarbet Drive and McCloud Ct. Care was taken to not remove native plants intermixed with the exotic species. Plants uncovered were various species of:
- ferns
- False Nettle
- Elderberry
- Virginia Mountain Weed
- Virginia Creeper
Yes, we did save the ill-favored poison Ivy!
Hopefully, our efforts will allow these plants to thrive and to give them a chance to out compete the invasives.
Due to the time allotted and hard work on the part of the volunteers, we were able to remove all the unwanted grass from this site. We filled 21 bags. Job well done!!
