- Enter the first paved driveway on the right off of Inwood Drive after turning in from Lake Wheeler. Park by the trailers at the end of the drive.
Join NC Wildlife Federation’s South Wake Conservationists Chapter and the stewards of Inwood Wildlife Garden for a hands-on volunteer day as we build our first-ever hibernaculum!
Wait… what’s a hibernaculum?
A hibernaculum is a protective shelter or refuge that wildlife uses to survive the winter dormancy period. Typically constructed using natural materials such as rocks, logs, branches, and stones, these structures create protected spaces for reptiles, amphibians, insects, and small mammals during the colder months.
We’ll have the materials needed for construction on hand. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, hand tools, sunscreen, bug spray, and water.
Not into building a hibernaculum? We have plenty to do!
There are lots of other ways to lend a hand at Inwood Wildlife Garden, including:
- Weeding the pollinator garden
- Mulching garden paths
- Planting aquatic plants around the wildlife pond
- Helping with general garden maintenance
