Deer Program

South Wake Conservationists operates a program in our area that is part of the statewide NCWF Deer Donation Program.  In support of North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) wildlife management goals, our deer program delivers free testing and a variety of educational programs annually to the general public focused on responsible deer management, safety in the field, ethical hunting practices, deer health monitoring, responsible game harvest, and field-care, and processing

This program also provides free and easy access to testing for Chronic Wasting Disease, an always fatal disease found in deer  Spread by contact between deer, our focus on this disease is placed on creating public awareness and discouraging public feeding of deer in both urban and rural areas which congregate deer and therefore promote the spread of this disease   Our program offers free sampling of hunter harvests for CWD testing at our Harnett Area Deer Donation Site and helps to fund the needs of participating North Carolina Hunters for the Hungry processors that they collect samples for CWD testing as well

We partner with NCWRC and the New Hill Hunter Education and Mentoring Program to to deliver hands-on workshops aimed at developing woodsman-ship and hunting skills field events, including to not limited to deer processing  Whole deer donated by local hunters are used for this training.

This is a win-win-win, encouraging all to reduce overpopulation and starvation of deer, preventing damage to farmers’ crops, and helping feed people

The goals of the program:

  • Slow the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease
  • Reduce crop loss on farms through deer harvest
  • Promote a long-term solution for managing deer density
  • Teach sportsmen and women how to provide a sustainable source of protein to their family and their community.
